Íæż½ã½ã’s students and mentors at the ABRCMS Conference in Anaheim, California.
This week, Íæż½ã½ã welcomes home all of the Íæż½ã½ã’s students who presented their research at national conferences in the month of November.
Over a span of three weeks, 24 student presentations were delivered at five national conferences across the country. Students from the Summer Scholars Program, Assistantship Mentoring Program (AMP), and the Katies for Aging Research and Equity (KARE) Program showcased their work across the country.
Their research, and the research of many other Íæż½ã½ã’s students, will be on display at the Fall Research Symposium on December 1 from 11:45 AM to 1:15 PM in the Rauenhorst Ballroom in Coeur de Catherine. This symposium is part of a weeklong on campus.

Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR) Summit - November 1-2 in Indianapolis, IN
This annual gathering of R25-funded aging research training programs showcases undergraduate student research from funded institutions. Nine Íæż½ã½ã’s students who are scholars in the Katies for Aging Research and Equity (KARE) R25 Program attended this summit and eight students presented posters showcasing their research.
Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting - November 2-6 in Indianapolis, IN
This annual meeting is an interdisciplinary gathering of scientists, clinicians, and students from across the country and does not often showcase the work of undergraduate students for presentation. Nonetheless, four of our KARE scholars were accepted to present their work at this prestigious conference! In addition, Hannah Hausman submitted a poster abstract and was invited instead to deliver a podium presentation on their work - a rare honor and a true testament to the quality of their research!
American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting - November 6-9 in Boston, MA
The APHA Annual Meeting has a strong focus on health equity and recognizes that despite advancement in science and policy, there are persistent health disparities that remain in our country. Two students were able to attend this prestigious conference along with Dr. Meghan Mason, and Grace Anne Ludvik had the opportunity to share her research as a podium presentation!
Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) - November 9-12 in Anaheim, CA
ABRCMS is a conference that has focused on supporting underrepresented undergraduate students in STEM fields for the past 20 years. This year, 11 Íæż½ã½ã’s students were accepted to present their research at this esteemed conference. Notably, four Íæż½ã½ã’s students - Eyerusalem Alene, Morgan Batiste-Simms, Naddi Jillo, and Kerrie Roozen - received competitive travel awards from ABRCMS. In addition, two KARE scholars - Hannah Hausman and Anchee Nitschke Durben - were awarded monetary ABRCMS 2022 Presentation Awards for delivering outstanding research presentations.
Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) 2022 Fall Conference - November 17-19 in Washington DC
APPAM is the nation’s premier conference for Public Policy scholars and Íæż½ã½ã’s student and faculty participation was in keeping with the University’s Academic Master Plan’s focus on Public Policy as a signature program. To our knowledge Ava LaPlante and Victoria Delgado-Palma were the only undergraduate students accepted to the conference! The rest of the papers in the student sessions were MA and PhD students. The discussant remarked on how their paper was of the same quality as these more advanced students!
Collaborative research has expanded into the curriculum at Íæż½ã½ã’s within the last year, with faculty being able to designate their courses with Research and Creative Inquiry (RCI). Collaborative Research is part of the Office of Scholarly Engagement, Íæż½ã½ã’s hub for engaged learning, which also includes the Antonian Honors Program, Community Work and Learning, Competitive Fellowships, and Global Studies.
