Co-Athletes of the Week

It was a big weekend for the Íæż½ã½ã Athletics Department, as both the golf and softball teams were in actions at each teams respective NCAA Tournament.

Both teams found quite a bit of success in their respective tournaments as well, as golf finished 12th in its NCAA Championship debut and softball won the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time in program history to advance to the Super Regional. The success wouldn’t have been possible without senior golfer Madi Roe (Apple Valley, Minn./ Eastview) and first year center fielder Amber Montero (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial), who have been named Co-Wildcat Athletes-of-the-Week for their outstanding performances over the weekend.

Maddie Roe

Roe was spectacular in the final tournament of her career, as she was Íæż½ã½ã’s top individual finisher at the NCAA Golf Championships in Houston. The senior finished in a tie for 33rd place after shooting a four-round score of 317 and helped the Wildcats finish in 12th place as a team with a score of 1306. Roe was also the most consistent player on the course for Íæż½ã½ã’s throughout the four day tournament. After shooting an opening round 82, Roe shot in the high 70s for the rest of the week, including her 77 on the third day of the tournament.

Amber Montero

Montero was the hottest hitter in all of Iowa over the weekend for the Wildcat softball team, as she was named Co-MVP of the Regional Tournament after going 10-17 at the plate with eight RBI, three home runs, and one home run. After going 0-3 in Íæż½ã½ã’s opening game against Chicago, the first year center fielder was 10-14 over the next three games and helped the Wildcats upset No. 3 Luther twice to advance to the Super Regional. Montero’s big moment came in Game 7 against the Norse, when she had two game tying hits, including one in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 5-5 after Luther’s dramatic come back, and scored the game winning run in the 6-5 victory.
