Global Studies Faculty Policies & Handbook

Standards for Faculty Teaching Abroad

Upon return, all faculty who lead courses abroad will receive an email from the Office of Global Studies that contains the expense report template and instructions for completing the expense report. Faculty are required to provide receipt documentation for expenses abroad along with the completed expense report.

Expense reports and receipts are reviewed by the Office of Global Studies before being submitted to the Business Office, along with any returned travel advance funds (if applicable).

The entire expense report process must be completed within 30 days of the faculty's return.

Íæż½ã½ã does not encourage, but will consider requests for minor children of faculty to accompany a course. In principle, a minor is under the age of 18. Requests are subject to the Policies and Guidelines on Accompanying Spouses/Partners and Children.

Íæż½ã½ã allows faculty teaching abroad to invite their spouse, partner and/or minor children to accompany them on their course abroad, subject to the Policies and Guidelines on Accompanying Spouses/Partners and Children. Other accompanying adults are not permitted to accompany an off-campus program.

Requests for accompanying spouses, partners and/or children must be made when you submit a course proposal to the Global Studies Advisory Committee. Please consult these policies carefully for information on responsibilities, requirements, and making requests.

Student enrollment must equal a maximum of 16 - 18 students for one faculty member, or 20 - 26 students for two faculty members, depending on the nature of the course. GSJ courses have a maximum enrollment of 20 students. In most cases, there will be two faculty directors, or one faculty and one staff, particularly for courses with multiple sites or that are take place in developing countries.

At least one director must travel with the group to and from the study abroad destination.

The Office of Global Studies is committed to providing safe travel opportunities for students. However, there are some courses and programs that may travel to areas that have a current travel warning. Although an area may have a travel warning, a course may be deemed as safe by our office based on a variety of factors including the travel route. Students who study abroad in an area with a travel warning must complete a travel warning waiver form prior to departure.
